tax-billI’ve had a few emails from people asking about what happens with their tax bonus payment if they have an outstanding tax bill… Do they still get the money?

The ATO have stated that the working australians tax bonus will not be used to offset any other liability. This means that even if you have a current tax debt, provided you are eligible (assuming you haven’t made an alternative agreement), you will still receive the tax bonus as a cash payment made to yourself.

Hi Emily,

If you are entitled to both of these payments you will receive them both.

However, if you only earned a small amount (ie. if your taxable income was under $11,000) it is unlikely you will qualify for the Working Australians Tax Bonus. See this post for more details or this one to link to the online eligibility calculator.

I started work in May 08. Completed tax return in July, and it seems to me that I got all the tax money back which I paid during those 3 months in that tax return. So it seems to me that I am not going to get the $900? Is this correct?

Hi Unhappy,

I have to tell you, it still feels strange to me to be faced with taxpayers who received all of their tax back and are unhappy about it… this tax bonus has sure turned things on its head!

You are correct, Unhappy. As you have received all of your tax back, you had no adjusted tax liabilty and therefore, you will not qualify for the Working Australians Tax Bonus.

I wish I had better news for you.
