About the Blog
The Dollars & Sense blogs began early 2007 as a way to quickly communicate information and updates to clients and others. I asked around to discover what it is people really want to know from the bean-counters and which services they wished their accountant provided. As it turns out, there is a whole LOT… more than enough to justify regular blog updates.
We started out with two blogs – once for Small Business Owner and one for Average Joe Taxpayer.
Today the blog has a new look (she’s undergone several facelifts), a new location (from Blogger to Wordpress hosted on our own server) and have been combined into the one – Dollars & $ense.
At the time of conception, this is what we had to say about them.
About the Practice
Alan Lewis Accountants (formerly known by the looong name Alan Lewis Accounting & Taxation Services) started out as an after-hours-only mobile service during the 2007 tax season. Christie was the primary initial contact while Alan worked full-time hours for a local practice during the day and worked his behind off all night. Other than a website and blog, we did no advertising. Word of mouth really saw things take off and by tax time 2008 we were having to turn away business. At the start of 2009 (yes, as recent as that) we decided to take the plunge, toss in our steady jobs and go full-time on our own!
Through the use of internet, extranets, email, fax and phone we soon found ourselves servicing clients accross four states from our little office in Blue Haven. Technology can be a marvelous thing! Twleve months later, we negotiated a lease for a larger office in the popular Lake Haven Shopping Centre area and welcomed three new members to the team.

About Us
I guess it goes without saying that we are official nerds so I’ll leave out the resume (you can find those details on the main site) and stick with a few things you might not know about us.Alan and I are a husband-and-wife team with three loud and demanding delightful children aged 6, 7 and 10. All three insist that accounting is BORING and they never want to do that when they grow up. They keep life interesting for us!
Professionally, Alan’s passion lies in the areas of tax strategies and small business growth. As such, Alan deals mostly with Taxation and Financial Accounting. Al has finished his Masters now, but I am still studying (I think I have the next 50 years of study planned ahead… so much I want to learn in so little lifetime).
When not visiting clients on-site, I spend much of my time on the computer, forming entities or serving our distance clients through the use of extranets. As a result, I have adopted the maintainence of the website/blog/product store/newsletters, etc. I deal mostly with Management Accounting, and client education & information.
Though we work different areas of the business, we are both hugely passionate about customer service in all its forms. Trialling new resources or methods to communicate with and inform our clients is an ongoing endevour for both Alan and myself. Knowledge is power after all.
